Volume 3 of the Palik Series, published in conjunction with the North American Jules Verne Society Long before Verne stories had formed the basis for such movies as Around the World in 80 Days, many of his plays were theatrical blockbusters on the 19th century stage. This volume by Frank Morlock, leading translator of Verne plays, explores some of Verne’s youthful stage writing. Four plays range from romantic comedies to a scientist’s discovery that there may not be such a difference between human and ape after all! By Jules Verne with Michel Carré, Charles Wallut, and Victorien Sardou; Translated by Frank Morlock; Introduction by Jean-Michel Margot. This series is published in conjunction with the North American Jules Verne Society, najvs.org.

Mr Chimp Other Plays Jules Verne Brian Taves Frank Morlock Books

Jules Verne crafted theatrical works before ever writing his most famous novels. These four early plays co-written by Verne lend further evidence of his ability to handle humor in absurd, imaginative situations.

"Mr. Chimpanzee", gives this collection its title and comes accompanied with an excellent discussion concerning evolution as a theme in Verne's writing (Mr. Chimp hits on Darwinism around the edges) and sets a tone closest to the author's forays into the realm of fantastic scientific extrapolation for which he is known.

Some plays click equally as well on printed page as performed on live stage and some not as well. To various degrees, these four works might lean slightly towards the second category for those not willing to invoke their imagination to provide for missing actors, actresses and sets.

Mr Chimp Other Plays Jules Verne Brian Taves Frank Morlock Books Reviews

This is volume three of the highly regarded PALIK Series of Jules Verne novelties issued in recent years by Bear Manor Press, Albany GA. These are little known, perhaps more widely accurate to say unknown, works by Jules Verne who, the editors inform us "has for more than a century and a half, been the widest-read author of fiction in the world." We have read similar encomiums laid at the feet of the mystery thriller writer Edgar Wallace, Agatha Christie and perhaps some others as well (Sherlock Holmes . . Tarzan . .) yet it should be obvious once these books reach your doorstep that they do indeed deserve the keenest attention and consideration. It is a labor of love for all participants.
Although few are aware of it Jules Verne wrote a fair number of theatre pieces, mostly early in his career and four representative examples have been lovingly collected for our reading pleasure here MR. CHIMP & OTHER PLAYS (first English translation for these pieces). Besides "Mr. Chimp" the plays anthologized are "The Knights Of The Daffodil," "The Adoptive Son" and "Eleven Days Of Siege." The plots are often slight but the latter two entries offer a bit more in the nature of involved human interraction which is why perhaps I preferred them. Victorien Sardou we discover was coauthor with Verne on "Eleven Days of Siege" and in perusing it I was reminded of Oscar Wilde's incisive and witty comedies of manners. This is Jules Verne unlike anything we have ever experienced before.
We are favored with a helpful List of Verne's Theatrical Works covering the years 1845 to 1888, a healthy forty year period. Some of these were not just plays but opera comiques, and in one instance ("Le Docteur Ox") the music was composed by none other than Jacques Offenbach. Brian Taves explains on p.78 that "Mr. Chimp" (or "Mr. Chimpanzee" to call it by its proper name) has more in common with Verne's later themes of science fiction and adventure mongering than the other three, treating as it does Darwinian themes of evolution. Verne called this play "musical monkey business" and I sense "Mr. Chimp" can be enjoyed on multiple levels.
There is a General Introduction by Verne scholar Jean-Michel Margot as well as introductions to each individual play. I saved Margot's Introduction until the very end but read the other four brief ones before delving into the plays themselves. I was somewhat put out by the fact that the plot of each theatre piece was encapsulated ahead of time. For our convenience? I can't say. I wish there had been a Spoiler Alert or something. But this was a minor distraction. It was quickly overlooked by the satisfaction I derived in savoring Verne's way with these engaging theatrical bon mots. I recommend this book to you for a hearty and memorable reading experience.
